Lui Tuck Yew Under Fire For Not Aligning Transport Fare Fall Of 1.9% To SG50 Theme

In light of the recent announcements that local transport fares will see a fall of 1.9% by the end of the year, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew has come under heavy criticism by the Singaporean public for not aligning the figures to the SG50 themed celebrations.

As part of the SG50 Golden Jubilee this year, celebrations, shopping sales, promotions and products have been heavily themed around the ‘50’ numeral.

From local food producer Ballgus’ SG50 fishcakes to limited edition SG50 Hello Kitty Plushies, respected businesses and corporations alike have been jumping on the SG50 bandwagon, completely throwing originality out the window.

However, despite its originality, one jarring statistic was not aligned with the SG50 theme – the drop in transport fares.

Local citizen, Justin Neo, was one of many Singaporeans outraged to hear that the SG50 theme was disrupted by the unnecessary transport fare drop that was completely uncalled for.

“Look, either reduce transportation fares by 5.0%, 50% or not at all,” he said to Durian Daily reporters, adding that SMRT “really ruined the mood so close to the 50th birthday of National Day”.

“We’ve been asking for lower transport fares for years,” he continued, “Even when they finally give it to us, it’s along with a big fat middle finger.”

"You want to raise fares 5% also can, but 1.9% is just wildly inappropriate."

At press time, the general public consensus was that the fare reduction of 1.9% clearly had no place in the year of SG50 and should be reserved for SG19 or SG190 instead.
