Newspapers Now Called 'Storiespapers'

In an unprecedented move, Singapore newspapers will no longer call themselves newspapers in the coming year. Instead, they will be identifying themselves as 'storiespaper' from the new year on.

Deputy editor of former 'The New Paper', Matthew Bank, talks about the change in identity. “We feel that we have a duty to report the truth to the public. And the truth is, we just don't report news any more. The New Paper will now be called 'The Book Shelf'. 'TNP' is now 'The BS', because TBS is trademarked.”

While 5 things about the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is a great boon for the religion, and a story about kids believing in Santa is a touching holiday reminder, The Straits Time editor says they are apparently, “Not news.”

Readers of SPH's various outlets are reportedly not happy about the change.

Jon Ann Lee Sim said, “Where else am I going to get stories about Chinese women bribing US custom officers with sex if not from the news? Magazines are so outdated now.”

27-year-old Ezzy Ted questioned, “I need to know what happened to the woman who stole the lifejacket from that plane. This is important information that the public should know to be able to make informed decisions in their lives.”

Both Oxford and Merriam-Webster defined 'Newsworthy' as; Interesting or important enough to be reported. Which begs the question, is 'Teen Grateful for Adoption' really more interesting and important than 'Hawkers Loses Livelihood'? Aden Ng is not a journalist.
