Teachers To Start Paying for Classroom Use
In the midst of current discussions as to whether teachers should pay for the use of parking space in school, a law has been passed that teachers will now have to pay for classroom use. The rent for classrooms will start at $12 an hour, or roughly $28,000 a year.
Acting Minister of Education, Ong Ye Kung, who has a Masters in Business Administration and not Education, commented, “Teachers must stop relying on government handouts and start paying their own dues.”
The minister added that school cleaners should mentally be prepared to pay for bicycle parking too.
The fact that the Ministry of Education even considered charging teachers for parking space shows how much they care about the wallets well-beings of the caretakers of our country's children.
Local geography teacher who wished only to be identified as Mr Hong said, “I think we should pay for our own parking space. After all, we don't have a lot of things to worry about.”
“It's not like our job is very challenging. We just have to take care of hundreds of hyperactive and immature students daily and help them grow into productive and moral members of society. It's a very relaxing job.”
Deputy Prime and Finance minister, Tharman Shanmurgaratnam was quoted with saying, “Should they step up to a supervisory role, a cleaner can earn even more, say $1,600 a month.”
Cleaner Wah Yu Xiao says, “Wow! S$1,600! Think of all the things that I can buy with that money while paying $450 for meals, $100 on transport, and $650 for my 1 room HDB rent at the happening location of Simei!”
With the ability to earn such a high income, Wah is happy to work himself out of poverty and stop relying on government handouts for basic necessity and survival.
The Ministry of Education has estimated that schools forgo S$66,000 in profit per year in parking fees. Teachers in Singapore earn an average of S49,000 per annum, or S$2,000 less than the monthly cost of living calculated by numbeo.com. Cleaners in Singapore have a minimum wage of $1,000.
