How Singaporean Students Are Motivated To Do Better Today
The Singaporean education system has often been criticised for its rigid structure that emphasises rote learning and discourages critical thinking in students. Here are some measures that the Ministry of Education (MOE) have taken to further encourage and motivate young students to work harder in schools today:
Enforcing a punishment where students stand on one leg while reciting the alphabet backwards
Forcing them to announce who their crush is to the entire class if they fail a test
Letting students know that being attractive will earn them better grades
Constantly reminding them that “even that Donkey from Shrek gets better test scores than you”
Encouraging critical thinking by letting students come up with creative ways to play truant and escape detention
Free pizza for every student with grades B and above; those who score below get only the pizza crust
Introducing Poker Fridays as an incentive where children can make more pocket money with their lunch money
