It's hard to find information on the cost of living in Singapore that is not directed at foreigners and expatriates. But we at Durian Daily have scoured the vast seas (A.K.A Google) and found the relevant information.
Our research shows that in 2014, the ideal cost of living is $72,000 a year, while the median salary of a Singaporean is slightly more than $45,000. This is funny as a research from 2013 shows that less than 75% of Singaporeans are earning that amount and the top 10% of Singaporeans owns over 40% of the country's wealth. And by funny, I mean it's funny in the same way that having water come out of noses are funny. It's hilarious to anyone not experiencing it. With the current party's staunch refusal of implementing a minimum wage to help fix the wealth inequality, a clear solution to this pressing problem is to implement a 'maximum wage' scheme, stopping people from earning more than $100,000 a year so that there will be more money to go around. On the streets, we shared our ideas with the citizens of Singapore, and while most called us, "Siao gin nah!" or told us to "Stop talking nonsense!", we came across futuristic progressive delivery boys and cashiers who didn't hesitate to weigh in. Wah Bo Leh, a delivery boy who earns as high as $5/hr (less than $16,000 per annual) says, "Maximum wage sounds great. People need to understand our pain. $1,000 a month how to buy flat?" Moni Les, a 7-Eleven cashier who makes a steady $7/hr (less than $25,000 per annual) added, "I think maximum wage is a good idea. Since minimum wage complain so much, I don't think maximum wage can complain already, cause so high." Singapore ranks 30th in CIA's Gini coefficient index, one of the highest in first world countries. Meaning our income inequality is pretty 'gao gao'. We managed to defeat countries like Kenya, Nigeria, the Dominican Republic, and the United States of America. We urge Singaporeans to support the maximum wage scheme, and continue to aim for superiority in income inequality.
